Makerere guild president Shamim Nambassa has lambasted all those who claim she has crossed to NRM.
She says, the allegations are untrue, baseless and uncalled for since she is working with all political groupings to ensure Makerere University celebrates its 100th anniversary in peace.
Rumors about the alleged crossing have first been published on social media and several news websites after seeing her in a photo with NRM publicist Emmanuel Dombo.
Nambassa met Dombo at Makerere as recognition of those who have contributed to the success of Makerere ensured. Dombo had previously served as the guild president of Uganda’s best academic institution prior to joining politics.
However, no sooner had she met Nambassa than a host of social media pundits claimed, she had crossed to NRM.
In a telephone interview with Ms Nambassa, she has never crossed to the NRM party but is only willing to work with all former guild presidents to ensure Makerere celebrates 100 years anniversary in well enough for the betterment of the academic institution.
“I do not want to respond to the allegations but I have been working with all former guild presidents and Dombo is one of them,” Nambassa said.
Makerere University has since January 2021 recognized all those who have greatly served the institution as former and current leaders. Among them are Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka, Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, Norbert Mao among others.
The recognition have seen the University endorse them including Ms Sarah Kagingo, the Press Secretary to the Speaker of Parliament on public events and Lectures.
Well as several members of the University claim she has crossed to the ruling party, Nambassa says, she has never planned about leaving a party to leadership and will not leave in such disrepute.
“It is just cheap talk and I wish not to respond to it,” she says.
Nambassa was endorsed by NUP to become the Makerere University guild after a hotly contested election that saw senior party officials including The Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya pitch camp at the Ivory Tower to ensure she wins.
